Balassagyarmat
Balassagyarmat lies in northern Hungary, in Nógrád area and constitutes the center of administration in Balassagyarmat district. This almost 19 thousand people city lies in the valley of Ipoly river, on Slovakian border, about 90 km north from Budapest. The city stretches for 29 km.
Balassagyarmat is named the capital of Połowców land. Today, when architecture, craft, apparels and the customs of this ethnic group vanish, in Balassagyarmat You can find distinct footprints of perishing cultures. The local museum is devoted to Połowcom family (one of best in the country in its category ) as well as neighboring attractions.
To Hungary Balassagyarmat unites with the surnames of three masters of native literature: visionary poet Imre Madách (the author of The tragedy of man), XIX century novelist Kálmán Mikszath (named the songster of Połowców land) as well as Bálint Balassieg – renaissance soldier, reveler, patriot and poet, who learnt Polish language, to praise beautiful girls from Cracow.
The collaboration of Ostrołęka and Balassagyarmat in Hungarian Republic began from 16 March 2000, when the agreement of mutual collaboration was signed by The President of Ostrołęka – Arkadiusz Czartoryski and former Mayor Balassagyarmat – Juhász Péter. Since then, The Day of Hungarian Republic is celebrated yearly in Ostrołęka, which falls on the day 15 March.
