Traditions

From ages in Ostrołęka region the native tradition of Kurpie district is cultivated. This is tradition of hard and strong willed people living in forests that covered these lands for hundreds of years.

They lived of hunting and taking of honey, and later also agriculture. In time of need they were also hard soldiers, who fought with better armed invaders. Relentless character and the good acquaintance of forest decided about their superiority. Kurpie's character is identified with stubbornness, economy and the fondness of independence.

Today in Kurpie district schools's, children and youth learn under the direction of the popular artists about traditional skills and crafts, some of which mainly are: production of artistic paper cut-outs, weaving, carving.

In Ostrołęcki region You can find a lot of interesting objects which once bestowed the unrepeatable character of Kurpie's village. Peasant house of Kurpie district is built so that front with ornamented tops, corners and door is facing the road. The roofs of houses were formerly thatched. The inside of peasant house of Kurpie district consisted from four rooms. The most important features of the chamber were: painted box, weaver's workshop, shelf or open cupboard, bowls and spoons stucked in special slots. Traditional houses can be seen in places like:Farm of Kurpie, Kadzidło or Nowogród.

Kurpie's cutout is the most important element of popular art. Characteristic forms of local arts resemble trees and round stars.

Colored outfit of Kurpie district is until now the key element of some customs and cultural events. Women dressed in woolen, striped (two-colored) skirts, white flax shirts and hemmed sleeves, corsets.
On the heads girls have velvet decoration, and the married women have kerchiefs. Men wear white cloth bottom, flax shirts, vests and overcoat made from dark grey cloth girdled with wool strap, leather shoes and hat on the head.
