Ostrołęka – it’s good to see !

The Town Hall – Pl. Bema 1
, it’s the current seat of the municipal authorities, erected in the 20s of the 19th century in the classic style, rebuilt a few times; last time in 1997.

The Kurpie Culture Museum – located in a 1928 building at Pl. Bema 8, which used to be a post office. Since 1975, it has been running activities aiming at collecting goods of culture and making them available, organizing exhibitions, educating, executing scientific research and popular-science publishing. The Museum’s exhibition activity includes permanent exhibitions connected with the history of Ostrołęka’s land and temporary exhibitions that are changed a few times a year.

The Ostrołęka Art Gallery – located at Pl. Bema 14 in a former merchant’s town house. It’s a self-government body that has been operating since 1988, now part of the Ostrołęka Culture Center. It runs educational, school-oriented, cultural and social activities. Apart from exhibitions and vernissages, it also organizes small-audience classical and jazz music concerts. Within its educational scope of work it holds classes for children, youth and adults in the form of painting, drawing, graphic and other forms-of-art oriented workshops.

Sain Mary’s Visitation Parish Church – located at ul. Farna; it’s the oldest shrine in Ostrołęka. It was erected in 1399 in the gothic style thanks to Janusz I the Old, the Duke of Warsaw. The church was destroyed and burnt several times. At the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, the church was rebuilt and ornamented with baroque interior and sculptures. The altar area bears gothic features. In the outside elevation one can find stone and metal balls that, among other times, come from the period of the Polish-Swedish wars. There’s a bell-tower near the church; it is 13 m high and built on a square plan in the 18th century. In 1999 the church was extended with side aisles and a vestibule.

St. Anthony of Padua’s Church – located ul. Gomulickiego 1. It’s the most spectacular historical building in Ostrołęka. The monastic complex includes the baroque church, a post-monastic cloister garth and a cloister courtyard surrounded by cloisters, the so called Calvary. The church was built between 1666 and 1696. The Calvary with its cloisters is crowned with three turrets and was exhibited between 1751 and 1752.

Antoni Madaliński’s Bridge – built in 1995. Its steel arch suspended structure was inspired by the shape of the bridge in Seville, which came into existence on the occasion of the world Universal Exposition EXPO 92.

Bem’s Forts – The Monument and Mausoleum of the 1831 Ostrołęka Battle – it is situated on the battlefield of the biggest November Uprising battle, on the site of the former Tsar Army’s gunpowder magazine, surrounded by moats – at the junction of two streets Warszawska and Stacha Konwy. Nearby there is a monument devoted to horse artillery charge that was led by Joseph Bem.

St. Wojciech’s Church – at ul. I Armii Wojska Polskiego. Originally, it was an orthodox church built at the end of the 19th century for Russian troops that were stationed in barracks. After driving the Russians away, the building was changed for a catholic church. One of the aisles is devoted to the 5th Regiment of Zaslaw Uhlans that were stationed near the church in the inter-war period.
